Large piles of waste,
including wood and plastics, continue to obstruct portions of the Odawna drain
at Circle, raising new concerns despite recent government-led cleanup efforts.
This substantial
concentration of waste that has remained in the sewer since the terrible floods
on June 29 is seen in footage taken on July 13. This has caused local
shopkeepers and commuters to worry that heavy rains could cause another
catastrophe. Many locals are concerned that neighboring settlements may be in
jeopardy as water levels rise from Avenor through Circle toward the sea.
Although the government has made large investments in dredging projects over the years, many have questioned the long-term efficacy of these efforts due to the ongoing garbage accumulation.
Additionally, locals have seen a pause in the Greater Accra Resilient
and Integrated Development (GARRID) project because they are concerned that
incomplete building could make future flooding worse.
Although the Jospong
Group of Companies and President John Dramani Mahama have made action to manage
waste around the capital, residents stress that in order to safeguard the city
from recurrent flood threats, immediate, ongoing drainage maintenance and quicker
waste clearance are crucial.
