In an effort to alleviate the impact of the recent terrible floods, President John Dramani Mahama has designated July 10 and 11, 2026, as National General Cleaning Days.
Friday is
still a regular working day and not a national holiday, even though these two
days are devoted to a large clean-up effort in seven impacted regions,
including Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Volta.
All employees must, however, put the cleanup ahead of their regular responsibilities. Ahmed Ibrahim, the Minister of Local Government, has ordered that all stores and marketplaces in the impacted districts stay closed on both days in order to guarantee the success of the activity.
In order to stop possible disease
outbreaks after the floodwaters, this stringent precaution permits the
necessary desilting of drains, debris removal, and disinfection of public
areas.
The minister issued a warning that traders who disobey the shutdown will be subject to legal repercussions, and security services have been instructed to enforce this presidential decision.
With the subject "Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning
Ghana after the Floods," the project seeks to get the nation ready for the
next period of intense precipitation. On Saturday, July 11, participation is
open to all citizens.
