In order to give
prisoners useful practical skills, Sunyani Central Prison has launched a new
pig farming project.
The "Think Prisons
360 Degrees" agenda of the Ghana Prisons Service, which emphasizes
enhancing rehabilitation via hands-on agricultural training, includes this
effort. There are now six pigs in the piggery, three of which are adults and
three of which are young.
Inmates who take part in
this project gain practical experience in managing animals, which will enable
them to work for themselves after they are freed. By supplying fresh,
high-quality pork, the program aims to improve the diets of both staff and
convicts while also generating a steady stream of income for the jail.
This is seen by prison
officials as an important step toward a successful reintegration into society.
By providing these worthwhile possibilities, the facility shows how deeply
committed it is to assisting prisoners in acquiring skills that will enable them
to live better lives outside of jail.
