Following the reported arrest of one of its members, Dennis
Miracles Aboagye, at Kotoka International Airport by the Economic and Organized
Crime Office (EOCO), the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed grave
concerns.
The party claims that Mr. Aboagye was arrested by EOCO agents
and immigration officials as soon as he arrived. The NPP claims that since
then, officials have refused to let his attorneys see him and have not revealed
where he is now.
The NPP described the detention as an act of intimidation
rather than a sincere attempt at law enforcement in an official statement. They
draw attention to the fact that Mr. Aboagye, who is presently running for the
post of National Communications Officer, has been an outspoken critic of the
administration, particularly with relation to "galamsey" or illicit
mining.
The party is now requesting that he be charged and brought
before a court in accordance with the Constitution, or that he be released
immediately. They are also urging EOCO to grant him access to his family and
legal representation. EOCO has not yet commented publicly on the situation.
