Four people are now facing the penalties in an Accra court after a teenage traveler's ordinary trip to Qatar turned into a nightmare. The trio, which consists of a tiler and three travel brokers, is charged with smuggling 4.6 kg of marijuana. They allegedly gave the pills to an unsuspecting traveler headed for Doha after concealing them inside a jute bag.
The illegal shipment was
found by Qatari authorities upon arrival. The tourist was apprehended right
away and is currently incarcerated for 25 years. Following a police inquiry
prompted by this tragic result, 57-year-old Isaac Techie-Menson, 25-year-old Comfort
Ofosu, 43-year-old Catherine Quaye, and 38-year-old Kwaku Blorme were arrested.
The defendants have
entered a not guilty plea to charges pertaining to the business and control of narcotics.
Each of them was granted a GH¢100,000 bond by the court, subject to stringent
requirements such as property justification and frequent check-ins with
investigators.
The law is taking a
strong stand, despite the defendants' claims that they thought they were only
sending food products like gari and cocoa butter. The accused must appear in
court again on August 3, 2026, to begin the next round of this grave legal
battle while international investigations continue.
