Divine Lunga, a football
player from Zimbabwe, narrowly survived a horrific gun attack while driving
through Johannesburg's Hillbrow district. The 31-year-old sportsman, who plays
for the Zimbabwean national team and Mamelodi Sundowns, was allegedly traveling
to church with his younger brother when an unidentified gunman opened fire on
their car.
Amazingly, Lunga made it
out of the ordeal unscathed. According to local sources, the attack might have
been a case of mistaken identification because the attacker thought the
football player was an undercover police officer. Although no one has been
taken into custody as of yet, South African authorities are currently looking
into the incident as an attempted murder.
This concerning incident
brings to light South Africa's continued battle with high rates of violent
crime, which makes it one of the world's most dangerous nations. Captain
Tintswalo Sibeko, a police spokesperson, affirmed that the inquiry is ongoing,
albeit more information is still scarce as the authorities carry out their
work.
