After a significant joint
National Security operation on Monday, January 26, commuters in Kumasi can
relax. In the Sofoline and Santasi regions, sixteen commercial drivers were
detained and their cars seized for charging exorbitant, unapproved fares. Investigations
revealed that some drivers were unfairly charging passengers full fares for
very short distances.
In addition to dealing
with the illegal charges, the team sought to reduce traffic jams at important
junctions, which frequently cause delays for travelers on international routes.
Top security officer Ivan Bilson clarified that the operation was motivated by
the necessity to uphold law and order and safeguard the public interest.
The action has been
warmly received by passengers, who commend the authorities for making sure they
are not taken advantage of. The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly is currently
handling the seized cars for future action. Lawlessness on the road will not be
accepted, as this activity serves as a clear reminder.
