In Maamaso, a small town in the Birim North District of
Ghana's Eastern Region, close to New Abirem, a marital dispute over what to
make for supper has resulted in tragedy. A 29-year-old man, only known as Kofi,
was gravely hurt in the Monday incident after his wife, Maafua, 21, allegedly
stabbed him after a furious fight.
The misunderstanding reportedly started when Kofi gave his
wife money to make one of his favorite local foods, banku and okro stew. Later
on, though, Maafua claimed that the money her husband provided her was
insufficient to purchase the ingredients for okro stew, so she chose to make
light soup instead. According to reports, she put some of the money aside for
later.
Kofi questioned his wife's choice when he got home from work
and saw that a different lunch had been prepared. What began as a casual
conversation swiftly escalated into a heated dispute.
Maafua told her husband that she had done her best with the
funds at her disposal, according to Adom News. Her answer, however, did not sit
well with Kofi, who reportedly became irate. Both parties struggled in the heat
of the moment as the argument turned into a physical altercation.
Kofi apparently reached for a knife during the altercation,
but Maafua was able to pull it away from him. She allegedly stabbed him with
the knife during the confusion.
Atta Mallam, a local witness, told Adom News that Maafua's
behavior seemed deliberate. She did not appear alarmed or perplexed. He
asserted, "She seemed to know exactly what she was doing."
Francis, Kofi's brother, who was in a different room at the
time of the incident, claimed that he hurried out when he heard loud yells and
screams. My brother was already bleeding on the ground when I emerged. He
recalled, "I carried him without hesitation and took him directly to the
New Abirem Government Hospital."
Medical staff at the facility provided emergency care before
transferring Kofi to the Koforidua Government Hospital for further treatment
due to the severity of his injuries.
To ascertain the circumstances surrounding the stabbing,
local police have begun an inquiry into the occurrence. Many members of the
Maamaso community are in shock, saying they can not believe that a dispute over
food could turn into such violence.
Residents described the couple as quiet and peaceful, saying
they rarely quarreled in public. “We never expected this from them. They were
always together,” one neighbor said.
In order to support the ongoing investigation, authorities
are anticipated to interview witnesses and family members while Kofi continues
to receive medical care.
This sad event serves as a reminder of how little household disputes can get out of hand and have permanent effects if they are not resolved amicably.
