NHIA is working harder to stop unlawful charges in the Ahafo Region

Mawuli George, the National Health Insurance Authority's (NHIA) Ahafo Regional Director, said the organization is committed to ending the practice of medical institutions in the area collecting unlawful fees, or co-payments, from its members.

At the NHIA's third-quarter review meeting for 2025, held at Mim, Mr. George told Adom News that the agency has stepped up its efforts to stop hospitals from charging prohibited fees to covered patients. He claims that public awareness campaigns have made it easier for people to spot and report medical establishments that use these kinds of tactics.

According to him, this has resulted in a number of violators being forced to reimburse impacted customers. He clarified that in order to make sure that all service providers in the area are completely aware of the program and do not impose unapproved charges, the NHIA has also improved education for them.

“We continue to sensitize service providers and subscribers to ensure that no one is made to pay for services covered by the scheme,” he said.

In order to help the authorities track down and punish violators, Mr. George advised subscribers to always get receipts for all payments made to medical institutions.

“We encourage our members to be confident and report any case where they are asked to pay illegal fees,” he added.

According to the NHIA, public cooperation is still essential to putting a stop to co-payment policies and guaranteeing equity in healthcare delivery.
