The Nigerian Electricity
Regulatory Commission (NERC) has authorized a ₦28 billion fund for electricity
distribution firms (DisCos) to install free prepaid meters throughout the
nation in an effort to reduce the burden of projected electricity billing and
increase power supply efficiency.
The program is a
component of NERC's redoubled efforts to close the massive metering discrepancy
that has caused millions of Nigerian homes to pay for electricity that they do
not use. The Commission claims that the ₦28 billion in funding will allow DisCos
to start distributing prepaid meters widely and for free to customers.
According to NERC, the
goal of this new initiative is to encourage accountability, openness, and
equity in the electricity billing system. Customers will have more control over
how much electricity they use thanks to the free meter deployment, which also
solves the long-standing issue of estimated bills, which frequently causes
public ire.
To guarantee that the
meters are deployed correctly in every location and reach actual users, the
Commission underlined that the deployment will be continuously watched.
Additionally, DisCos have been cautioned about taking advantage of clients or
collecting money without authorization.
According to energy
specialists, this ruling could promote timely payment of electricity bills and
rebuild public confidence in the power industry. Because metering enables more
precise energy accounting, it is also anticipated to enhance revenue collection
for DisCos.
With the assurance that
the distribution will be carried out in stages to reach both urban and rural
regions, the NERC asked Nigerians to exercise patience while the implementation
phase gets underway.
An important turning
point in Nigeria's progress toward a more open and effective energy sector has
been reached with this ₦28 billion approval.
