A 17-year-old boy named Auwalu Muhammad has been taken into
custody by the Bauchi State Police Command for reportedly removing his sister
Rukayya Muhammad's eyes in what authorities believe to be a ritualistic attack.
The startling event took place in Bayan Dutse Village, which
is situated in the Wailo, Kubi Ward of Bauchi State's Ganjuwa Local Government
Area. Since then, the case has caused indignation and incredulity throughout
Nigeria, with many denouncing the alarming increase in crimes involving rituals
among youth.
The kid used false pretenses to entice his gullible younger
sister into a nearby thicket, according to the spokesperson for the Bauchi
State Police Command. Once isolated, he allegedly attacked her and brutally
removed both her eyeballs in an attempt to complete a ritual for money and
power.
Little Rukayya, the victim, was discovered unconscious in a
pool of blood and was sent right away to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University
Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi for prompt medical attention. Regretfully,
medical professionals verified that the vicious assault had left her
permanently blind.
The arrest of Auwalu and five other accomplices suspected of
belonging to a ritualist syndicate was verified by the Police Public Relations
Officer (PPRO) in a statement released on Monday, October 20.
The suspects include:
- Auwal
Dahiru (17) – the main suspect
- Mohammed
Rabiu (19)
- Saleh
Ibrahim (20)
- Nasiru
Muhammad of Soro Town
- Hassan
Garba of Soro Town
- Garba
Dahiru (43), also from Soro Town
According to police investigations, the suspect was
allegedly swayed by a group of elderly men who persuaded him that he would
become wealthy and gain spiritual authority by removing a person's eyes,
especially those of a close family.
The operation that led to the suspect's quick arrest and the
injured child's rescue was led by CSP Aliyu Mohammad Goni, the Divisional
Police Officer (DPO) for Soro Division. Muhammad Adamu, the victim's father,
reportedly filed a distress report with the police team when he hurried to the
Soro Police Station right after the incident.
Police confirmed the arrests, calling the conduct
"gruesome and inhuman" and promising a thorough investigation to hold
all those responsible accountable.
“The command condemns this act in the strongest possible
terms. We assure the public that justice will be served, and the perpetrators
will face the full force of the law,” the police spokesperson said.
In the meantime, social media users throughout Nigeria have
expressed their sorrow for the tragic incident of young Rukayya and called for
stricter laws to stop ritual killings as well as improved training for youth
regarding the perils of superstition.
Since then, the Bauchi State Police Command has emphasized
that no ritual or belief system should ever excuse violence and asked parents
and guardians to continue being watchful and keeping an eye on their children's
actions.
