The government's purchase of 20 freight wagons and two diesel
locomotives has been formally justified by the Ministry of Transport, which has
rejected arguments that the machinery is out of date.
The Ministry stated that the British Rail Class 56 locomotives'
performance depends on structural integrity, refurbishment quality, and
reliability rather than just age in response to social media users' recent
inquiries about their age. These locomotives were given a five-year guarantee,
updated safety systems, and comprehensive overhauls in the UK.
The Ministry further stressed that, in contrast to earlier
purchases of passenger trains, these assets are made for heavy freight. The
Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) is now training local technicians to
increase maintenance capability and has secured a five-year supply of spare
parts to assure sustainability.
The project is anticipated to be very financially feasible.
The government expects freight earnings to recoup the nearly US$3.18 million
expenditure within two years. In the end, this project will serve as a vital
pillar of the country's round-the-clock economy by reducing traffic congestion,
lowering logistical costs, and connecting the Tema Port to northern Ghana and
nearby landlocked nations.
