Folarin Balogun, a
striker for the United States, is free to participate in the pivotal World Cup
round-of-16 match against Belgium. His automatic one-match ban was suspended by
FIFA for a one-year probationary term.
During the United States'
2-0 triumph, Balogun was first given a straight red card for fouling Tarik
Muharemovic of Bosnia-Herzegovina. FIFA clarified that unless the player
commits a similar infraction within the year, the suspension will remain
ineffective under Article 27 of its disciplinary code.
While US teammate
Christian Pulisic said that the squad was "super happy" and felt the
original red card was unjust, the decision has garnered strong criticism. The
Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) voiced "astonishment," pointing
out that the decision goes against competition rules that require red cards to
be automatically suspended.
In order to preserve the
values of fair play, the RBFA is currently looking into every possibility. On
the other hand, US President Donald Trump praised FIFA in public on Truth
Social, calling the action "reversing a great injustice." As the
competition progresses, attention turns to the field in anticipation of the
impending match.
