Instead of offering short-term sympathies, Accra's
destructive floods and fires must be addressed immediately. Dr. Kingsley
Agyemang, an insurance specialist and member of parliament for Abuakwa South,
is advocating for a significant change in Ghana's response to catastrophic
events.

Predictable weather occurrences cause significant financial
losses, property damage, and life disruptions in the capital city every year.
Dr. Agyemang publicly cautions that the nation is trapped in a risky cycle of
reaction and inaction.
He blames irresponsible human conduct, such as building on
waterways, poor urban planning, and improper waste disposal practices, along
with natural causes, for the escalating situation.
He suggests establishing a special National Disaster Risk
Management Fund based on effective systems in the UK and Japan in order to
disrupt this trend. When private insurance systems are totally overburdened,
this organized safety net would take over.
Dr. Agyemang proposes using petroleum revenues, corporate
contributions from mining companies, and special levies to finance the fund.
Ghana would continue to repeat the same terrible cycle each rainy season in the
absence of this sustainable finance system supported by stringent building
enforcement.
It is time to take these hazards seriously and provide
residents with long-term protection.
