The terrible loss of 9-year-old Obeng Boateng Junior is being
mourned by a tranquil community in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality. In
Humjibre, Western North Region, the small child was discovered dead in an
abandoned galamsey pit.
According to Enock Happy Nkrumah, a local assembly member,
the tragedy started when the youngster vanished and did not come home. Members
of the community organized a search right away, but they were unable to find
him despite their best efforts.
In order to get more help, the family eventually reported the
incident to the Sefwi Bekwai Police Command. When the boy's body was found
inside an abandoned galamsey pit, a subsequent search uncovered the devastating
truth. He unfortunately drowned in the water-filled area, according to the
authorities.
After his body was recovered, the bereaved family and the
police conferred and made the required funeral arrangements. This tragic event,
which left a community to mourn the loss of a young life cut far too short,
underlines the continued risks posed by abandoned mining sites in the area.
