A lighthearted argument
about fashion has evolved into a lovely instance of African solidarity. On
February 6, 2026, Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama attracted attention by
donning the traditional "fugu" smock while on an official visit to
Zambia. Even though some people on social media mockingly referred to it as a
"blouse," the lighthearted banter soon turned into a huge celebration
of West African culture.
At a business roundtable,
Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema joined in the fun by jokingly declaring
that he intended to order more traditional Ghanaian clothing for himself.
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana's foreign minister, stated that the goal of this
"fugu fever" is to restore African pride and identity, not just
fashion. What began as online pranks has evolved into a representation of the
two countries' friendship. We are all reminded by this cultural interchange
that our ancestry serves as a strong link that unites us throughout the
continent.
