For a crime of passion, a
Kenyan soldier was taken into custody. After a deployment in Somalia, Nicholas
Ireri unexpectedly returned home. He learned of his wife's covert relationship
with Alphy Migasha, a gym teacher.
At a tavern in Umoja One,
Ireri met Migasha. Their meeting is captured on CCTV footage from December. A
quick exchange of words descended into violence. Ireri was observed violently
assaulting Migasha after dragging him to the ground. Startled onlookers attempted
to halt the assault but were unsuccessful. Sadly, Migasha passed away from his
wounds.
The soldier is now on
trial for homicide. This can still result in the death penalty in Kenya.
However, judges now have greater alternatives following a 2017 ruling. Instead,
they could opt either a fixed prison sentence or life in prison. The case illustrates
a terrible triangle involving responsibility, betrayal, and a deadly outburst
of wrath.
