Official
action has been made by the government to legitimize commercial motorbike and
tricycle activities, commonly referred to as "Okada." The "Okada
Bill" was formally presented to Parliament by Transport Minister Joseph
Bukari Nikpe.
The
current Road Traffic Act of 2004 is to be modified by this proposed new law. It
will make it possible to use tricycles, quadricycles, and motorbikes for
business travel.
The
goal of the bill is to establish industry order. It will aid in the creation of
safety regulations for items like seat belts and essential safety equipment. It
also contains clauses pertaining to other significant regulatory issues.
Now
that the bill is in Parliament, MPs will shortly debate the suggested
modifications. Ghana will have legal recognition for commercial
"Okada" transport if it is approved. This will take place within a
system that is licensed and regulated.
This
action is consistent with years of support for the legalization of
"Okada." One of the main proponents of this shift has been President
John Mahama. During the 2020 and 2024 election campaigns, he pledged to
legalize and regulate the sector. For many young people, he thinks the industry
is a vital source of employment.
