In the Eastern Cape of
South Africa, a tranquil coronation descended into anarchy. To express their
displeasure with a recent appointment, protesters allegedly burned a number of
cars and houses on fire. A protest against Chief Solomon Ogbonna Eziko's installation
as a Nigerian monarch in East London resulted in the violence.
The community was
completely shocked when protesters targeted property purportedly owned by
foreign nationals. Serious worries about local tensions and inhabitants' safety
have been aroused by this intense stalemate. As the smoke clears from this
contentious cultural debate, authorities are now attempting to restore order.
