Following the recent severe rainfall that pounded
Accra, the town of Alajo was stunned by a melancholy finding. After floodwaters
finally subsided on Wednesday, locals discovered a little boy's lifeless body
inside a stuck commercial minibus known as a trotro.
The finding is yet another heartbreaking event in the
wake of Monday's devastating floods, even if it is still unknown how the
youngster became stuck in the car.
The calamity, which flooded homes and businesses
around the Greater Accra Region, has resulted in an increasing number of
fatalities. Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, the interior minister, informed
Parliament on Tuesday, June 30, that at least 12 individuals had sadly died and
that seven more were still unaccounted for.
Over 38,000 people nationwide have been impacted by
the intense rain, which has forced 7,761 homes to relocate. Emergency personnel
are still concentrating on determining the complete scope of the damage as they
carry out their challenging search and rescue missions.
As authorities try to assist impacted families and
find the missing, this most recent finding serves as a sobering reminder of the
risks faced by the floods.
