Thirteen people have been
arrested for various sanitation offenses as a result of the Kumasi Metropolitan
Assembly's (KMA) intensified enforcement effort to improve city hygiene.
Recently, residents, business owners, and places of worship in the Dichemso
suburb were taken aback by a series of surprise inspections by the
"Samansaman" team, which was made up of military soldiers and KMA
sanitation officers.
During the operation,
investigators found littered compounds and gutters that were significantly clogged
with plastic waste and silt, impeding the flow of wastewater. Some people were
merely told to clean their frontages, while those who disobeyed risked harsher
penalties.
Notably, when the
administrator of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints refused to
assist inspectors on the disorganized condition of the church grounds, he was
detained and taken to court. Henrietta Afia Konadu Aboagye, KMA Public
Relations Officer, clarified that the administrator disregarded several
nonviolent requests to cooperate prior to being arrested.
Kwaku Poku, the environmental
health officer, stressed that this program is a long-term commitment to
reinstating Kumasi as Ghana's Garden City and pledged that enforcement will go
on eternally until complete compliance is attained.
